How to Set Up a Trezor Hardware (Cold) Wallet

The Trezor is a dedicated hardware wallet. This is called a “cold” wallet because the seed phrase is generated offline.

FIRST THING: Only buy the Trezor hardware wallet from the official website -- Trezor.io

Once you receive your Trezor, continue: [a]

Unboxing

  1. Remove the Trezor One device from its packaging, ensuring it is sealed and untampered.

  2. The box should contain the Trezor device, USB cable, recovery seed cards, and some stickers.

Initial Setup

  1. Go to trezor.io/start and download the Trezor Suite desktop app for your operating system.

  2. Open the Trezor Suite app and follow the prompts to install the latest firmware on your Trezor device when plugged in.

  3. When prompted, disconnect and reconnect the Trezor device without holding any buttons.

Create a New Wallet

  1. Choose "Create a new wallet" to set up a brand new Trezor wallet.

  2. Select "Seed phrase backup" as the backup option.

  3. The Trezor device will display a recovery seed phrase. Write this down manually on the provided seed cards.

  4. Double check that you have recorded the seed phrase correctly when prompted.

Set Device PIN

  1. You will now set a PIN code to unlock the Trezor for future transactions.

  2. Enter a PIN code by selecting the numbers displayed in random order on the Trezor device screen.

  3. Confirm the PIN code by re-entering it on the device.

Finalize Setup

  1. Select which cryptocurrencies you want to be able to access from the Trezor wallet (e.g. Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.).

  2. Give your new wallet a name if desired.

  3. Choose the "No passphrase" option unless you want an additional passphrase.

Your Trezor wallet is now ready!

Be sure to store your recovery seed safely, as anyone with it can access your crypto funds. The PIN allows you to unlock the device for sending transactions securely.

To receive crypto, simply provide the wallet address shown in Trezor Suite. To send, you will need to unlock the Trezor device with your PIN.
