How to Set Up a Ledger Hardware (Cold) Wallet

The Ledger is a dedicated hardware wallet. This is called a “cold” wallet because the seed phrase is generated offline.

FIRST THING: Only buy the Ledger hardware wallet from the official website -- https://www.ledger.com/

Getting Started

  1. Choose which Ledger model you want - Nano S, Nano S Plus, or Nano X.

  2. Unbox your new Ledger device and inspect that packaging is sealed and untampered.

  3. The box includes the Ledger device, USB cable, instructions, and recovery sheets.

Initial Setup

  1. Go to ledger.com/start and download the latest Ledger Live software for desktop or mobile.

  2. Connect your Ledger to your computer/mobile device and open Ledger Live.

  3. Follow the prompts to initialize your new Ledger wallet.

  4. Set a 4-8 digit PIN code for access.

  5. Very carefully write down your 24-word recovery phrase and keep it secured but separate from the device.

Installing Crypto Apps

  1. In Ledger Live, go to the Manager tab to install blockchain apps for currencies you want to use.

  2. Apps like Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc must be installed to generate their wallet addresses.

  3. Your Ledger device has limited storage, so only install apps you need.

Receiving Cryptocurrency

  1. Go to the Accounts tab and select the cryptocurrency account you want to receive.

  2. Choose "Receive" to get the wallet address you can share to receive those funds.

  3. Carefully verify you are providing the correct coin's address when receiving.

Sending Cryptocurrency

  1. Go to Accounts > Send for the crypto you want to transfer out.

  2. Enter the destination wallet address you want to send funds to.

  3. Review the transaction details and approve it on your Ledger device itself.

Buying, Swapping, Staking

  1. Ledger Live integrates partners to buy and swap cryptocurrencies, though fees are higher.

  2. You can also stake supported proof-of-stake coins to earn staking rewards.

  3. Explore DeFi apps through Ledger Live's Discovery section.

Advanced Features

→ Install Ledger Live mobile to manage your Ledger wallet via Bluetooth (Nano X only).

→ Connect your Ledger to crypto wallets like MetaMask for additional functionality.

→ Use tools like Zapper.fi to view your entire portfolio across multiple wallets.

Always keep your 24-word recovery phrase backed up safely, as losing it means permanently losing access to your crypto funds.
