The Ledger is a dedicated hardware wallet. This is called a “cold” wallet because the seed phrase is generated offline.
FIRST THING: Only buy the Ledger hardware wallet from the official website -- https://www.ledger.com/
Getting Started
-
Choose which Ledger model you want - Nano S, Nano S Plus, or Nano X.
-
Unbox your new Ledger device and inspect that packaging is sealed and untampered.
-
The box includes the Ledger device, USB cable, instructions, and recovery sheets.
Initial Setup
-
Go to ledger.com/start and download the latest Ledger Live software for desktop or mobile.
-
Connect your Ledger to your computer/mobile device and open Ledger Live.
-
Follow the prompts to initialize your new Ledger wallet.
-
Set a 4-8 digit PIN code for access.
-
Very carefully write down your 24-word recovery phrase and keep it secured but separate from the device.
Installing Crypto Apps
-
In Ledger Live, go to the Manager tab to install blockchain apps for currencies you want to use.
-
Apps like Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc must be installed to generate their wallet addresses.
-
Your Ledger device has limited storage, so only install apps you need.
Receiving Cryptocurrency
-
Go to the Accounts tab and select the cryptocurrency account you want to receive.
-
Choose "Receive" to get the wallet address you can share to receive those funds.
-
Carefully verify you are providing the correct coin's address when receiving.
Sending Cryptocurrency
-
Go to Accounts > Send for the crypto you want to transfer out.
-
Enter the destination wallet address you want to send funds to.
-
Review the transaction details and approve it on your Ledger device itself.
Buying, Swapping, Staking
-
Ledger Live integrates partners to buy and swap cryptocurrencies, though fees are higher.
-
You can also stake supported proof-of-stake coins to earn staking rewards.
-
Explore DeFi apps through Ledger Live's Discovery section.
Advanced Features
→ Install Ledger Live mobile to manage your Ledger wallet via Bluetooth (Nano X only).
→ Connect your Ledger to crypto wallets like MetaMask for additional functionality.
→ Use tools like Zapper.fi to view your entire portfolio across multiple wallets.
Always keep your 24-word recovery phrase backed up safely, as losing it means permanently losing access to your crypto funds.
